Indianapolis Cultural Trail a Legacy of Gene and Marilyn Glick: Planning and Feasibility
Storrow Kinsella Associates facilitated Mayor Peterson's request to study the feasibility of an urban greenway concept. The year-long effort established the conceptual route and design, and secured city and broad community support for this seven-mile transformative urban greenway. By showing that a lane of traffic could be removed from the street system, we made the case that existing right-of-way was sufficient to maintain vehicular traffic flow while accommodating a separated off-street, two-way bicycle facility with a separated and parallel pedestrian way. The design guidelines for its implementation resulted in a world class facility with positive economic and social impacts that have far surpassed the projections of the original study.
The Cultural Trail connects to the off-street, county-wide greenway trail system and threads through downtown to create a complete and connected bicycle/pedestrian network.
